Lye CalculatorOur lye calculator was designed by us, soap makers, using our own sap values for some selected oils that we have found over time through our own expierence, give a more moisturizing bar of soap. One of the select oils is the coconut oil. You will be able to use a higer percentage of coconut oil without worry of creating a bar of of soap that will be to drying on the skin. Because of this, you will notice a difference in the amount of lye needed for a recipe calculated here, compared to other lye calculators. Babassu oil is another that we use our own sap value for. By default, the lye percentage is pre set at 100% sodium hydroxide, measurents are set to calculate in Grams and superfat ratio is set to 5%. To use our lye calculator, just enter your oil weights into the box next to the listed oils you want to calculate for. As each oil amount is entered, the cacculation totals will change at the bottom. If you want to calculate your recipe in other than grams, just select your measurement type from the drop down menu. If your recipe calls for potassium hydroxide, zero out the soduim hydroxide box and start entering your oil weights. the lye calculator will automaticly convert to 100% potassium hydroxide calculations and the results will be shown at the bottom. As an added feature, we have included the option of making a soap scrub or semi solid soap. Using the scrub option will add the extra water needed to make scrub based on the oils being used. The water calculated for all recipes is at the maxium for any recipe being entered into the lye calculator. We set it up that way in case you are trying a new recipe or are just starting out making soap. Using the maximum amount of water will help keep your recipe from tracing too quickly. If you are using a recipe that you are familuar with and know for sure that the fragrance or essential oils being used will not cause your batch to seize, you can reduce the calculated water result by up to 2 ounces per lb of oils. |
